Mosaics: Inspiration and Original...
Mosaics : Inspiration and Original Projects for Interiors
and Exteriors
by Kaffe Fassett, Candace Bahouth $35.00
ISBN: 1561583731
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Superb colorist Kaffe Fassett departs from his usual medium of textiles
to unleash his magic on the
world of mosaics. Teamed with expert needle artist-turned-mosaicist
Candace Bahouth, Fassett
proves no less adept at manipulating the harder materials--glass and
ceramic tesserae, broken china
and tiles, mirror fragments, pebbles, seashells, and even faux pearls--than
his accustomed softer
substances of fabric and yarn. As with most of Fassett's oeuvre, this
volume is more an assemblage
of highly imaginative ideas than a traditional how-to approach. A
number of the projects do include
step-by-step instructions and there is good coverage of the basics
(tools, materials, bases, tesserae
preparation, adhesives, grouting), but the presentation presumes the
readers' willingness to
experiment, as well as some degree of confidence in their own creativity.
But again, as is typical of
Fassett's productions, the simple act of leafing through these pages
offers unlimited inspiration.
Stunning photographs abound with brilliant hues and spectacular creations
by the authors and by
mosaic artists around the world: grottoes, chapels, cars, walls, furniture,
terraces, entire buildings.
And perhaps mosaic work is not so different from textile manipulation
after all: witness the many
pieces composed like a patchwork quilt, or the tapestry-upholstered
armchair that reveals itself
actually to be entirely covered not in fabric but in ceramic tesserae.
This volume is truly a feast for
the eyes. --Amy Handy

Decorated concrete figures have recently moved out
of the realm of eccentric folk art and roadside religious "grottoes" into
mainstream yards and gardens. Here are projects by several designers
for making mosaic stepping stones, birdbaths, carved planters, and art
figures. The projects are grouped by skill level and offer step-by-step
instructions on how to mix concrete, make molds, and embed mosaics. The
finished products are heavy, year-round installations intended to stay
where they are placed. This is a good, practical book for public library
craft and garden collections.

6,000 Years of Mosaic Art
by Elaine M. Goodwin $29.95
ISBN: 1570761590
Editorial Reviews
Book Description
This glorious book reveals the exquisite simplicity of decorating
and designing with mosaics. As it
delves into the history of the art, it draws on sources from Ancient
Greece and Rome, the
Renaissance, Pre-Columbian Mexico, the Victorian age, the Art Nouveau
movement, through to the
latest contemporary work. Enhanced with hundreds of color photos,
Classic Mosaic explores the
application of mosaics using classical influences. The versatility
and decorative potential of mosaics
is then interpreted in a dazzling array of historically-inspired projects.
In chapters on materials,
equipment, and techniques, Classic Mosaic explains how the process
of application is an integral
part of the design, whether using ceramic, Venetian glass smalti,
gold, marble, stones, shells, or
mirror. Elaine Goodwin, a respected mosaic artist, clearly demonstrates
how a design is developed,
from the initial idea to the finished piece. From intricate Grecian
floor patterns to a shimmering Klimt
chair mosaic, Classic Mosaic shows how to create splendid designs
inspired by 6,000 years of
mosaic art.
Ancient Mosaics
by Roger Ling $22.50
ISBN: 0691004048
Editorial Reviews
Book Description
Using thousands and sometimes millions of pieces of colored stone
or glass to create elaborate
patterns or scenes is a painstaking and expensive way to decorate
a surface. Yet the art of mosaic
enjoyed spectacular success in the Graeco-Roman world, where its practitioners
created some of
the most beautiful artworks in history. This handsomely illustrated
and elegantly written book traces
the evolution of mosaic from the Hellenistic period to the early Christian
era, with particular
emphasis on the Roman Empire, and examines its regional variations
from Britain to North Africa
and from the Levant to the Spanish seaboard.
The eminent classical scholar Roger Ling explains how mosaics were
first made in the fifth century
B.C. with the use of inset pebbles to provide durable pavements. He
shows how mosaic became
one of the hallmarks of luxury in Roman times, when such masterpieces
of imperial floor decoration
as the black-and-white silhouette pavements of Ostia and the colorful
figure compositions of Piazza
Armerina in Sicily were created. From pavements, mosaic graduated
to walls and ceilings, where it
culminated in the soaring blue and gold work of early Christian churches
in Rome, Constantinople,
and Ravenna. Ling examines the wide range of styles and subject matter
employed by mosaicists,
whether geometric patterns or figurative scenes of mythology, agriculture,
and hunting, and explores
what mosaics reveal about domestic and imperial tastes and aspirations.
Such topics as techniques
and materials, the relationship of mosaic to other forms of interior
decoration, and the influence of
ancient mosaics in more recent times are also discussed in detail.

Exploring a number of unexpected mosaic materials and surfaces, The
New Mosaics utilizes basic
mosaic-making principles to create soft furnishings, journal covers,
jewelry, and more; even the more
common choices such as tabletops, frames, boxes, and vases often take
a less traditional and
sometimes downright funky approach. Besides stone, glass, tile, and
metal, materials include fabric,
paper, buttons, eggshells, cork, seashells, cardboard, magnets, and
found objects. A business-card
holder constructed from an old camera housing becomes a travelogue
of souvenir plates accented
with costume jewelry; a game table sprouts a multitude of playing
pieces and small toys; hundreds of
bottlecaps unite to form a tramp art wall hanging; tiny rhinestones
and faux pearls adorn a delicate
toiletry set. A gallery of creations by various artists provides further
proof that mosaics can be taken
to unusual and often interesting extremes: a staircase, a shower tiled
to look like a library, clothing,
buildings, and even cars sport a vast array of mosaic motifs, and
then of course there's South
Dakota's famous Corn Palace, entirely covered with elaborate mosaics
of the state's history.
